Community Engagement to Advance Science

Plan and execute events that engage all research stakeholders—including patients and communities—to advance scientific progress.

National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS)

Plan and support events that engage patients, families, community members, advocacy organizations, researchers, and other stakeholders in meaningful, collaborative discussions of scientific progress and unmet medical needs to improve the relevance of research efforts and the adoption of results.

Palladian Approach

Palladian Partners, Inc., has provided comprehensive strategic communications support to NCATS since the Center’s creation in late 2011. As part of its strategic plan, NCATS recognizes the need to engage the ultimate beneficiaries of research results—patients and communities—to advance the translation of scientific knowledge into meaningful improvements in human health. As one approach to community engagement, we assist NCATS with the planning and execution of two key public events each year: Rare Disease Day at NIH (RDD) and NCATS Day.

NCATS and the NIH Clinical Center co-host RDD to raise awareness about rare diseases and their impact on patients’ lives. NCATS Day is designed to reach an even broader audience of patients and communities to help the Center shape its research priorities.

For these important opportunities to engage stakeholders, Palladian provides a range of support, including:

  • Branding the event
  • Planning the agenda
  • Promoting attendance
  • Creating videos and multimedia
  • Providing comprehensive logistics

The 2018 RDD was the most successful observance to date, with record in-person attendance and participation via webcast. Activity during the annual RDD chat garnered nearly 60,000 impressions for NCATS and 61.9 million impressions overall.

NCATS Day, now in its second year, continues to attract a diverse and growing audience. In response to feedback from previous attendees, the 2018 event included an “engagement studio” during which community participants provided direct input on a proposed research project.
