Helping to End Addiction Long-termSM

Provide digital communications support for the Helping to End Addiction Long-termSM (HEAL) Initiative.

Client

National Institutes of Health (NIH)

Challenge

Develop a web content strategy, write scientific content, plan a database implementation, and design, develop, and launch a new web presence for NIH’s Helping to End Addiction Long-termSM Initiative.

Palladian Approach

The NIH HEAL InitiativeSM is a trans-agency effort to speed research and development of solutions to the opioid public health crisis. Palladian began working with NIH on a digital presence for the initiative just before its launch. We created an identity and a web presence to showcase several hundred funding opportunities and awarded projects. Palladian produced the following:

  • A strategic roadmap outlining audiences, user journeys and expectations, goals, and key performance indicators to guide decision-making
  • A modular, pattern-based design strategy and a structured content model to connect and describe content across the site, including planned future content
  • A web back end based on Drupal 8, supporting a front-end user experience with mobile responsiveness and Section 508 accessibility
  • Descriptions of all funded research programs

Results

Within an accelerated timeline, Palladian built and launched a stand-alone website integrating structured content and visual patterns into a customized Drupal site. Informed by user research and testing, Palladian developed and executed a content strategy that included visual and written storytelling to humanize the science and a promotion strategy using social and email marketing. We also capitalized on in-person events to enhance the awareness of the HEAL Initiative. The website now hosts resources for initiative stakeholders, including proceedings of an investigator meeting that brought together more than 350 HEAL researchers and advocates.

Palladian-produced research spotlights enhance HEAL’s web presence by providing narratives behind the research. The spotlights cover everything from the stigma of opioid research to non-opioid treatments for chronic pain. They represent a significant portion of site traffic and increase awareness of the initiative’s efforts to stem the opioid crisis.
